…And Baby Makes Five

I’ve always been known as the quiet and shy one in my family.

My sister Sabrina is the loud and gregarious one.

Our brother, Dan is the no frills, even-keeled, gets along with everyone in every situation kind of guy. He’s also not one for pomp and circumstance so it was not surprising when he came to us saying that he and his girlfriend Robin had eloped in April of 2009.

Typical Dan.

Still, Sabrina and I were thrilled to be insta-aunts to 7-year-old Charlotte and 10-year-old Connor, Robin’s children from her previous marriage. We were even MORE thrilled when, a few months later the newlyweds came to us saying they were expecting a child of their own. Baby Nicolas was born May 3, 2010 and, voila! baby makes five. It’s so fun seeing my big brother as a Dad (ok, and a little weird but I’m sure that will fade:)It makes me proud that he has seamlessly accepted responsibility for Connor and Char while still maintaining respect for the original family unit. What’s even better is that Robin and the kids have accepted us into THEIR lives just as seamlessly! When Robin asked me to photograph the family for their Christmas card this year I was beyond honored; plus, any excuse to travel to Massachusetts to see my family is worth it especially when my camera is involved!

Charlotte was a natural in front of the camera, smiling, joking, posing and working all angles which helped the more reserved Connor get into the spirit. Ridiculously beautiful children paired with the ridiculously gorgeous light rendered some fantastic shots!

I had to include this last image as it’s one of my recent favorites, and I take very little credit for it. On Thanksgiving, weeks before the family shoot, I had my camera and was letting Charlotte play around with it which she LOVED. Already a creative-type, she and I have a kinship with anything art related. In fact, most of the photos taken on Thanksgiving were by Char including this image. Connor was outside shooting hoops with his Dad, Char and I came out with camera and we were playing around with continuous mode as I was teaching her about motion shots and how to freeze the action. All I did was set the camera (and edit, of course!) but she composed, clicked and came up with this amazing lifestyle image. I think I’m going to have a lot of fun with my little artist in training…;)
